Major: English, Studio Art and Germanic Studies
Hometown: Evansville, IN
Classification: Senior
I really love the variety of areas I’ve been able to study at IU, and the surprising ways they connect. IU has enabled me to spend significant amounts of time on all of my main interests and to build a comprehensive vision of all the different areas that are involved in publishing, from managing a successful business to actually producing a new piece of literature.

Goodbye, Farewell and Amen

May 16th, 2012

Well, I’m officially a graduate. It hasn’t really sunk in yet, since I’m taking a few weeks off before seriously committing myself to the job hunt (it’s been a crazy semester, plus I’m trying to build up a little bit of a network instead of applying cold). I’ve been trying to decide what to write about for a week or so, but I have had way too many ideas. There’s so much advice I’d love to give incoming freshman and those who still have time left at IU. Luckily, there are lots of other bloggers who can take care of …

It’s not just what you say…

May 1st, 2012

One of the most important ideas behind presenting well is that it isn’t just about what you say, but how you say it. Incredible ideas poorly presented make little impact, and empty words presented well can sway an audience. Knowing that it is important to present well doesn’t really help anything though. Very few people (if any) can easily jump in front of a crowd and speak well (I’d guess that there really aren’t any). It takes practice and coaching. I never considered myself to be a good public speaker in high school. At IU though, I’ve gotten a lot …

The Great Bloomington Egg Hunt

April 17th, 2012

This year, I had my Easter weekend all planned out, and it was a pretty boring plan, involving mostly studying and some art projects. I’ve squeezed classes, and internship, leading a club, and an independent study into my last semester, with a long stretch of projects and tests beginning the day after Easter, so I was hoping to hit the books hard and give myself an easier week. I definitely had a little Spring fever and didn’t want to get started, so I dropped by my boyfriend’s apartment on Saturday to do some homework there. (I’d been reminding him to …

The Final Countdown

April 3rd, 2012

I’ve only got five weeks left as a student here at IU (and finals week doesn’t really count). I can’t believe how quickly the time has flown by. I have so much I still want to do while I’m here, so I decided to post my IU bucket list (thanks, Kathy, for the great idea!). If you’re a high school student, you should have a few more weeks than I do, but you should get started on your bucket list too. And while you’re thinking about it, you can start planning your list for IU too!

Go to the Little

Oh, the Places You’ll Go

March 21st, 2012

It’s amazing how quickly this semester is passing by (I feel like I’ve said this a few times before!) It’s already Spring Break here at IU (or, to be more accurate, Spring Break is already nearly over). I spent the first few days of my break making mugs in the ceramics room. It was really nice to have the place (mostly) to myself. After that, I drove back to Evansville to spend a few days with my family. It’s always kind of weird to be home. I’m so used to having my own apartment, eating when I’m hungry and knowing …

Decisions, Decisions

February 29th, 2012

It’s that time of year. It’s getting warm, the thunder is rolling, and the first flowers are beginning to sprout around campus. I’m placing bets with myself about whether the tulips or the daffodils come up first here at IU (I’m betting daffodils, but I have a terrible memory for such things). Although it was an incredibly mild winter, I’m still looking forward to spring. I’m always torn between spring and fall being my favorite seasons overall, but here at IU, spring is always tops. IU has the world’s best team of gardeners who keep the campus looking gorgeous year …

Reaching Success

February 17th, 2012

It’s hard to believe that its February already (and mid-February even!). This semester is speeding by even faster than the last one. I celebrated Valentine’s Day on Sunday, since we knew we’d both be really busy on Feb 14th. We had dinner at Grazie, which is an Italian restaurant on the square in downtown Bloomington. I’d only be there once before, several years ago, but I really enjoyed the food (and bread!). I’ve been pretty busy this week with group projects, and squeezing in extra hours working on ceramics. It’s been an eventful week, with my sister texting me the …

Ceramics: The Wonders of Glazing

February 3rd, 2012

This semester I’m taking an independent study in ceramics for one credit hour, which basically allows me to propose my own projects. I sit in during the classes of my ceramics professor from last year one day a week. This is really one of the great things about the art faculty at IU. They’re extremely passionate about what they teach, and love to pass their knowledge along to students. All of my art professors and graduate student instructors have gone out of their way to help students who want to learn more about their fields of art.

I’m particularly excited …

Let the job search begin!

January 18th, 2012

I’m a big fan of having lots of options. My last application for grad school was due on Sunday, so now its time to focus on finding job opportunities. Luckily, I’m taking two classes this semester that should be pretty helpful. I’m taking a graphic design class called Professional Practices, where the focus is preparing students to enter the graphic design job market. Our first project is designing our resumes and developing a self-identity system (a business card, letterhead, envelope, etc.). I’m looking forward to honing my resume design and getting some strong feedback. In my Marketing Communications class, the …

Future Plans and Current Reading

January 9th, 2012

Happy New Year! It’s officially 2012 now, and I’m looking forward to graduating in a few short months. At first, I was a little bummed that college was nearly over. I’ve had a really good time and met some awesome people. Now I’m excited for the end of college because I can’t wait for what’s to come. I’m not really sure what I’m going to be doing next yet (this week is finish-up-grad-school-applications week), but all my options are looking pretty good. I’m applying to MBA programs at IU’s Kelley School and Harvard Business School, along with Emerson’s Masters in …
